Why of Note taking

Why does everyone urge you to take notes? Many of you will dismiss it as a waste of time. Others may find it a good way of showing the world how busy you are. Yet, note taking is the most abused and misused of all study tools!

What is the real value of taking notes?  Notes are intended help you speed up revision. Well made notes will contain all the essential information such as the key points being made in the lesson, the definitions of terms and all other structures that you need for memorizing facts.  Notes also will help you focus on your lessons and the act of writing will keep you engaged and stimulate your visual and kinesthetic functions.  Finally, while making the notes you will be forced to identify the key points and concepts and record them for future reference.

It has been proved beyond doubt that note taking helps students perform well in their examinations.

Having said all this, it is important to know that the act of note taking alone is not sufficient. The notes should be accessible and easy to handle when you need them. Organize your notes in loose leaf sheets and put them into a suitable binder.  You can classify the notes and transferred to a completed binder as you finish your revisions. This will also give you a sense of achievement and a feeling that you are progressing in your revision. It will keep you motivated.

Note taking is also a test of how well you listen, comprehend when someone speaks to you. It also hones up your short term memory retention skills as it forces you to recall and record what was taught to you in class after a gap of a few hours.
